This bust is taken from Michelangelo's masterful full figure sculpture (1501-04) of the biblical David contemplating his battle with the giant Goliath. David--stoic against impossible odds and faithful to his beliefs--symbolized the essence of civic virtue to the Florentines. Michelangelo himself (1475-1564) was a prolific artist whose masterpieces are evidence of the Renaissance artist?s renewed interest in Classical Greek sculpture, Humanism, and Neo-Platonism. The piece is on display at the Galleria dell' Accademia, Florence. Made from bonded white marble, alabaster base, 15"H including base.
